3 more metro lines open

The airport rail, together with the new subway line 10 and the Olympic line, will open 2:00 pm today. the line 10 links Zhongguancun with the city's central business district in the east. the Olympic subways line , part of the planned Line 8, will not be open to passengers without tickets or accreditation. the price of a one-way ticket fro the new Beijing airport rail was finally set at RMB 25.

China, JP to bid for ivory

the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species held Tuesday gave the right to China to import African elephant ivory. Prviously Japan was the only country that had won the right.China and Japan will now have to bid in a one -off auction of 107.8 tons of ivory stockpiles later this year from the 4southern African countries-Botswana,Namibia,South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Violence erupts in Pakistan

The pluging Karachi stock market in Pakistan over the past 2 weeks triggered a riot Thursday. nearly 1000 angry investors protested on the street , some of whom smashed the windows of the stock exchange. Protestors called on the government to close and stabilze the stock market as soon as possible.

Medals to be awarded at sea

For the first time in history the award ceremony for sailing in the upcoming Olympics will be held at sea, Zang Aimin, Executive vice-President of the Sailing Committee(Qingdao) said friday at a press conference. The International Sailing Federation said this would make the contest more enjoyable.

Merkel's birthday marred

German chancellor Angela Merkel got rainstorms , a blackout and a damaged aircraft for her birthday when she turned 54 thursday. Several hours before she wrapped up the visit to Algeria and headed back to Germany, her aircraft was damaged by a mobile gangway ,which tore a hole in the fuselage. Algeria, which usually has a clear sky at this time of year ,was hit by rainstorms, causing a blackout later.
